Ben Howard

I’m so glad to be back blogging again, I’m so upset I lost my last blog and all of it’s history. So I will try my hardest to create some now, although I’m finding hard to find the desire to want to recreate what I’ve already created and lost :(
One artist I never got to write about was Ben Howard. I love Ben Howard so much, his music relaxes me..but I cant relate to much of his music, I do some, mainly the slow songs, like depth over distance. But I find it hard to relate to something you don’t feel..I struggle to feel ‘up’ to his upbeat songs.
Like I said on my previous blog..I find it hard to relate to some of Ed Sheeran’s songs because he writes a lot about love..don’t get me wrong, they’re good songs and I listen to them a lot..but I can’t put myself into them completely. Maybe it’s because I’ve never been in love. Until you feel that emotion, you can’t relate to it.
Anyway, I hear a lot of John Martyn in Ben Howard’s sound, and I like the tone of Ben’s voice and the way he plays guitar sometimes, on his lap. I know this has been about for years. Joni Mitchell used to play like this. But it’s nice to see this way and style of music on the cusp of the mainstream scene.
His album Every Kingdom was brought out in 2011 but it’s still in the charts..so that must mean something. Maybe new people are still hearing about him and buying his music. His music and name hasn’t sky rocketed into everyone’s TVs or faces. His album has had a steady amount of buyers. Either way, the album is great. The original is quite short for me, but the deluxe is great.
It’s nice to see Ben get the recognition he deserves at the Brits this year..I love natural music, I wish mainstream wasn’t so full of prosthetic puppets…and full of people with real ability and talent.
Due to Ed Sheeran’s amazing success, we’re now seeing a lot of singer songwriters popping up all over the place.
Fair enough it’s an in thing at the moment, but don’t copy or mimic him..an up and coming artist Lewis Watson sounds like an exact replica, same style, same vocal flairs, even plays the same guitar..he’s young and talented, no doubt and I enjoyed listening to one of his songs, I can see why he would float peoples boat. But I questions an artist who followers the crowd and not be themselves. maybe he’s just heavily influenced by him, which would be sweet. But if he isn’t then that’s not.
What I’m saying is, I like different, because the same old gets boring..that’s why I like Ben Howard, he producing and bringing something fresh and new.
A few lyrics I like of Bens are:
“And I cut my mind on second best,
Oh the scars that come with the greenness.
And I gave my eyes to the boredom,
Still the seabed wouldn’t let me in”
“Oh eyes like wildflowers, oh with your demons of change”
and
“And everybody ‘round here’s acting like a stone
There’s things I’d do, darling I’d go blind for you
If you let grow sometimes, let grow sometimes, let it grow”
I also love the way he smiles a bit when he performs sometimes, it seems really genuine and sweet. The fact you can see he’s enjoying himself, that then rubs off onto you.
I was lucky enough to see Ben live, it was amazing. He didn’t play many songs, but those songs he did play, were perfection.
P.S, I also recently saw City and Colour, was amazing. I’m so glad Dallas is playing reading this year :) can’t wait.
I hope to get back doing this more often instead of just posting pictures.
I don’t know if anyone reads these or not, but I kind of do this for myself. I talk to myself, my last blog was like a diary.
I think the next artist I will write about will be Keaton Heaston, he’s unique and calm.
